My progress photos:
How I would describe my hair since I started:
My hair is about 3 or 4 times thicker now and my receding hairline has grown forward about an inch. I’ve generated completely new hair follicles in my receding hairline — an area that’s been bald for twenty years.
What is my regime?
I’ve been following a regime of weekly microneedling (approximately based on the Follica patent) in addition to a topical, which consists of the following ingredients:
- 10% Minoxidil
- 10% Valproic acid
- 5% Sandalore
- 5% Peppermint oil
- 5% Zechtein magnesium oil
- 5% Castor oil (for Ricinoleic)
- 1% Velvet deer antler (for IGF1)
- 0.1% Cysteine
- 0.1% Taurine
- 0.1% Carnitine
- 0.01% Tretinoin
- 0.01% Cetirizine
- 0.01% caffeine
I also take high strength cysteine and low strength flush niacin with a smoothie every morning. The smoothie contains dark green leafy vegetables, low sugar fruits and vegan protein powder.
I also use 2.3% Diclofenac gel along my receding hairline as a PGD2 inhibitor. However, I don’t use this for 12 hours before or after microneedling because I believe PGD2 is required as part of the healing/generation process.
Other important notes
- I do not take Finasteride or any other DHT blocker. In fact, I take Dianobol before work-outs once or twice a week. Dianabol is potent DHT increasing anabolic steroid.
- I started losing my hair when I was about 16. I had a receding hairline by 17. I had significant thinning all over my scalp by 20. This progressed very steadily but I kept it under control with just about every treatment you can possibly imagine (Fin, Minox, Niz, LLLT, PRP — none of these worked for me but they did perhaps slow the hair loss). I’m now 40 and the regime above is where I have finally arrived at after a lot of trial and error.
- I have previously been able to control my hair loss but have never been able to generate completely new hair follicles (hair follicle neogenesis) until I started the above regime. This is the first time I’ve been able to generate entirely new hair follicles, in the last 20 years of trying.
Photos of hair follicle neogenesis
I am certain that I have been able to generate entirely new hair follicles because I have witnessed new hairs growing in areas of my scalp that have been bald for twenty years. Pictures below of some of them:

My hypothesis
Please note: I don’t claim to know that this is why my method has worked. I am simply trying to explain why I think it’s working.
I expect many of you reading this will consider this to be a wacky theory. As I say, I don’t claim to know this is the true action by which this method works. All I know is that I have tried everything I can possibly imagine and this combination of things is the only thing that has ever caused new hairs to generate.
How I think it works
I think there are 7 key pillars to this approach:
- Increasing VEGF (Minox)
- Decreasing inflammatory proteins including cytokines, TGFs and PGD2 (cetrizine, peppermint oil, Sandalore, taurine)
- Microneedling in order to create the required environment for hair follicle neogenesis
- Increasing IGF-1 (Sandalore, velvet deer antler, peppermint oil)
- Activating Wnt-signalling pathways (valproic acid, ricinoleic acid)
- Opening potassium-ion channels (minoxidil, carnitine)
- High strength cysteine supplementation + flush niacin on an empty stomach
First of all, you have to increase VEGF in order to build the ‘foundations’ required for hair growth — that’s the blood vessels that will deliver the amino acids required to create hair keratin. For this, I use 10% Minoxidil (in the mixture above).
Please read: Clarification on how I safely use 10% Minoxidil
I use the above mixture over about 60% of the top of my scalp in the morning. I apply drops of the serum along my hairline and along my centre parting — about 7-10 drops along my centre parting. Then I rub the solution into my scalp.
During the day (while we’ve been on lockdown) I’ve also been applying about 3 or 4 extra drops of the serum all along my hairline only (about 20% of the amount of serum you would use over your whole scalp). This is the area that has experienced the worst hair loss, so I’ve been using a very small amount of the serum along my hairline about 3-4 additional times per day. However, I only use the serum all over the top of my scalp once a day, in the morning. So, all in all, I am not using much more than I would be using if I applied the serum all over my scalp twice per day. I’m just focusing on the most important areas (my hairline).
About a month after I started using the serum 3-4 times along my hairline every day I saw significant hair regrowth — thousands of new hairs started growing all along my hairline. Since this is the area I am most concerned about I have focused on this area.
Concerns about 10% minoxidil
I’ve received some comments about 10% Minoxidil use. This is what I did to safely use 10% Minoxidil:
- I started using 5% Minoxidil twice a day (standard use).
- I saw no results from doing this and had no side effects.
- So I increased to 5% Minoxidil twice per day + 5% Minoxidil along my hairline an extra two times per day (the equivalent of 10% Minoxidil twice per day on my hairline).
- Arounbd this time I also introduced 10% VPA and 5% Sandalore. This is where I started to see quite significant results — at least 20 brand new hairs in my receding hairline area. This doesn’t sound like much but it was very important feedback because I had never seen completely new hair follicles develop in my receding hairline before (see figure 2). This was strong evidence for me that I had successfully achieved hair follicle neogenesis.
- At this point, of course, I got quite excited and started using the serum more often. Soon I started seeing hundreds of new hairs in my receding hairline.
- Around this time I started gradually increasing the Minoxidil content from 5% to what it is now — 10%. Since I was using the equivalent of 10% Minox by using 5% twice in the morning and experiencing no side effects, I considered it worth increasing the dose in order to accelerate results.
- I also introduced 0.001% tretinoin, which has been shown to double the effect of Minoxidil.
Secondly I’ve been decreasing inflammatory cytokines, including the transforming growth factors. These proteins ‘tell’ hair to stop growing.
Microneedling is self-explanatory.
IGF-1 is significantly decreased in balding scalps, so I use Sandalore, velvet deer antler and peppermint oil to increase IGF-1 in the wound sites. Peppermint oil also decreases inflammation and Sandalore also reduces TGFs.
The fifth, sixth and seventh points are all about getting cysteine (and the other components of keratin) to transfer from the blood vessel to the fledgeling (or potential fledgeling) dermal papilla, which may be crucial for steering the cells in the wound sites toward hair follicle neogenesis.
Note that although niacin flushing temporarily increases PGD2, I still favour this approach for forcing blood into extremities.
My hypothesis is that the cells in the wound sites ‘decide’ within minutes of wounding whether to create hairless replacement skin tissue or to develop a hair in the wound site. I think there are probably several factors involved in that ‘decision’ (I realize there is no thought process going on in the wound site. I use the word ‘decision’ to describe how the outcome will be influenced by variables in the wound site. ‘Decision’ is just an easy analogy). These decision factors, in my view, are:
- Is there a blood vessel to supply the required amino acids to create a terminal hair follicle? Every terminal hair follicle requires a blood vessel.
- Are amino acids able to transfer from the blood vessel to the fledgeling follicle at sufficient volumes to produce terminal hair growth? This, I believe is to do with potassium-ion channels and Wnt-signalling pathways. Although I must admit this is purely a hunch of mine.
- Cytokines, TGFs and PGD2: I personally think these things are extremely important. I use a lot of anti-inflammatories, PGD2 and TGF inhibitors because these proteins block hair growth. I believe there is an astronomically small chance of a hair follicle developing if you only microneedle. There are so many factors against neogenesis. However, by removing as many of those factors as possible I think you increase the odds.
